Men's Silver Rings — How to Choose Your First Statement Ring

Most men wear something between 6 and 10 mm. Below 6 mm a ring reads as understated or vintage; above 10 mm it becomes statement-only and starts to crowd the next finger. Our default for everyday wear is 7-8 mm — wide enough to carry texture and a clear silhouette, narrow enough that it disappears when you grip a steering wheel or a barbell. Weight is a function of width, depth, and finger size. A typical 925 sterling silver ring at 8 mm width and US size 10 lands between 12 and 22 grams depending on the design. Solid brutalist forms run heavier — some of our pieces hit 35 grams. Hollow or split-shank builds run lighter, and there is no objectively correct weight, only a felt one. A ring that feels weightless after the first hour gets ignored; a ring that feels like an anchor stays in the box. Aim for a piece you notice for ten seconds in the morning and forget by lunch.

The classical reading: thumb signals confidence and independence; index finger is leadership; middle is balance and identity; ring finger is commitment; little finger is taste and individuality. The functional reading: any finger that fits and does not interfere with your work. We make rings to be worn, not to follow folklore. Most of our customers wear two: one structural ring on the index or middle, one smaller piece on the little finger. If you only want one, the middle finger of your dominant hand is the safest start.

Wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimetres, and match it to a sizing chart. Do this at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest, and never on a cold morning. If the ring will sit over a knuckle that is wider than the base, measure the knuckle. For wider rings (8 mm+), order one half-size up — wide bands always feel tighter than narrow ones at the same nominal size. If you are between sizes, we recommend ordering the smaller; silver stretches, it does not shrink.

925 means the alloy is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals — usually copper. Pure silver alone is too soft to hold a setting or survive everyday wear, so the alloy adds structural strength. Different materials, different briefs, and platinum is denser, heavier, and roughly twenty times more expensive per gram. It does not tarnish. Historically the thumb ring signalled rank, archery skill, or wealth. Today it mostly signals taste — and it needs a ring built for the position. Thumbs are wider, flatter, and move more than fingers, so a thumb ring needs a wider band (typically 8 mm+) and a slightly looser fit to slide over the joint. Yes — that is what they are designed for. 925 sterling silver is hard enough to take everyday contact and soft enough not to crack under pressure. It will tarnish, which is a feature, not a defect: oxidation gives the metal depth. If you want a bright finish, a polishing cloth restores it in two minutes.
